Website Consulting FAQs
Is a website consultant a good fit for your business?
We think it’s simply doing what is required in the short-term on your website, but also helping you see into the future more clearly.
Website consulting means talking, diagnosing, planning, and sometimes even helping you fix stuff. Thanks to technology, it can be carried out in person or remotely. Most of ours is done remotely thanks to virtual meeting software and project management tools.
The word “consultant” comes with ambiguity. What exactly does one do?
Here are a few things:
- Plan a website strategy consulting
- Create website-specific user personas
- Build a clickable prototype or wireframe
- Gather & analyze website research
- Improve your search engine optimization (SEO)
- Help evaluate if you need a website rebuild
- Detect & help fix common website issues
- Plan the structure of your website with a site map
- and much more!
A website consultant will work with a variety of teams. We, for example, collaborate with:
- Agencies
- Internal Teams
- Contract Designers/Developers
Think of them as your website ally! They should fit into your workflow nicely and understand the dynamics of working with various skillsets and personalities.
Fees and rates will vary depending on the firm’s experience and depth of the consulting.
If you want to hire a proven website consultant, their hourly rate will probably be somewhere between $125 to $250 per hour. Fees, again, depend on the level of consulting you’re buying and the complexity of your website. They could range anywhere from $100 to $100,000.
We offer a few mini engagements under $500 to earn your trust before we dig into one-time engagements or custom engagements.
A website consultation is an initial meeting between a client and a professional website consultant. The conversation should keep a 20,000 foot view perspective and discuss the website's:
- current team
- current use of technology
- what's working
- what's not working
- conversions
- traffic
- future deadlines (if any)
- goals
To then answer these 3 critical questions:
- Is the consultant/client a good fit?
- Does the client's budget meet the consultant's offering?
- Is the timeline acceptable to the client?

To some people, yes. But, from a true definition, no.
The Web (aka World Wide Web) refers to the entire network of interconnected online resources. Things like Email, APIs, websites, social media, video, maps, images, podcasts, search engines, and more. A Website (also written as "web site") is a specific entity within this network, consisting of related web pages accessible via a unique domain name (e.g. https://protofuse.com).
The web acts as the broader landscape, while websites are like specific destinations within it. We offer website consulting.

Website consulting arrangements, at least from our experience, are work for hire situations. Most don’t require extensive website consulting agreements or contracts. We have a single authorization document for our one-time engagements.
One of the benefits of hiring a consultant is the “plug-and-play” value. They should be able to fix problems quickly and easily. Lengthy contracts and agreements only get in the way of solving problems.
With that said, engaging a web consulting firm without signing anything isn’t wise. At the very least, make sure the engagement details the scope of work that should include:
- deliverables
- timelines
- pricing
- unknowns (if any)
We rarely take on the actual execution work (design, development) with our engagements. If you need WordPress website development help or support, we highly recommend our partner Seahawk Media.
We do often oversee the design and development efforts of websites (regardless of CMS) to ensure it maps and follows the strategy, architecture, content, and SEO plan.
As a stand-alone service, we do not offer website hosting. We recommend WP Engine (get 20% off first month or 4 months FREE with this link).
With that said, we have previously offered website hosting through ProtoFuse (using our WP Engine partnership) to clients when it made sense to help facilitate other engagements.
